The Mahanadi River has a dam built across it.
Sambalpur Town is roughly 15 kilometres away.
It is the world's longest dam.
To create the dam, the majority of concrete and masonry is needed.
The dam gives visitors a singular, magnificent, majestic appearance.
Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru officially inaugurated the dam on January 13, 1957 after it was finished in 1953.
From the top of Gandhi Minar, a rotating minaret on the northern end, you can see the impressive Hirakud Dam and the vast body of water.
