OVERVIEW

Khordha Travel Guide

Khordha is the administrative division of the state of Odisha in India. This district was formed on April 1, 1993, by division of earlier Puri District into Khordha, Puri, & Nayagarh districts. In the year 2000, the name of the district was altered to Khurda. The capital city of Bhubaneswar is situated in the district Khordha.

This district is the most urbanized of all districts of Odisha. Khurda Road, the railway station which serves the town is also the divisional headquarters of the East Coast Railway of Indian Railways. This district is known for cottage industries, brass utensils, cable manufacturing units, and railway coach manufacturing. Kedareswar Temple

Dedicated to God Siva & Goddess Gouri, this Kedareswar temple is situated in the same location next to Mukteswar Temple. The myth goes that the king Lalatendu Kesari, after the tragic episode related to 2 lovers Kedar & Gouri, had designed this Kedareswar temple in their mind.

Nandankanan Zoo

This is a Zoo of Khordha, Odisha which is situated at a distance of 20 kilometers from Bhubaneswar. This place is famous for its botanical garden, natural lake, and zoo. The newly released Natural lion safari is the largest of its kind in India. The best attraction of the place is the white tigers that are present here which makes this place unique all across the world.

Brahmeshvara

According to the engraving originally attached with the temple, this temple was constructed to enshrine the linga known as Brahmesvara by Kolavati, who is the mother of Somvanshi king Uddyotakesari, in latter's 18th regnal year at the locality recognized as Siddhatirtha at Ekamra. So, this temple offers a datum-line in the chronology of the Orissan architecture.

Khandagiri and Udayagiri

These twin hills are located in Bhubaneswar. The place has 117 caves. and, the Rani Gumpha is the largest cave in the Khandagiri & Udayagiri hills. Another cave recognized as the Hathigumpha is also there where rock is engraved with Hathigumpha legend by King Kharavela. The caves also have Barabhuja temple & Jain temple.

Lingaraj temple

This temple is the best example of Orissan architecture. In the elegance of its proportions & richness of the surface treatment, this is one of the most refined and finished manifestations of temple architecture.

Siddeshwar

Signalling the end of the first phase & forestalling the second phase, the Mukteswar temple facing west is a vital landmark in an advanced course of the architectural movement in the city –Bhubaneswar. To the northwest of the Mukteswar temple is Siddhesvara temple. This temple is the specimen of the Khakhra Order, in which the emergence of the typical Orissan form is virtually complete.

Rajarani

Picturesquely set Rajarani temple is the combination of elegance & grace, famous for the unusual formation of its tower & sculptural embellishments. Facing east, double amlas, crowning some of anga-sikharas are reminiscent of Kandariya Mahadeva temple. Built in the eleventh century the specialty of this Rajarani temple is that it has no presiding deity.
