India Gate was once known as the All-India War memorial and this war memorial is famous being the memorial for over 70,000 soldiers of the British Indian army who lost their lives. These soldiers actively took part in the First World War and died between 1914 and 1921. Many soldier’s names are inscribed on the gate today to keep their memory alive in every citizen’s heart to date and now it has become a favoured tourist spot too. The architectural style of the place is highly appreciative and it highly resembles the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. In the Bangladesh liberation war in 1972, a black marble plint with a rifle was built here along with a war helmet and the structure is bounded with eternal flames.

The flames are described as the flame of the Immortal soldiers and this is known as Amar Jawan Jyoti. The structure serves for all the Indian soldiers who list their lives and were unknown and being one of the largest war memorials found in the country, many people visit this place to pay their tributes to the brave soldiers. The memorial-gate covers an area of 306,000 m 2  and was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens. He was also the main architect of the city if New Delhi and he led the deigning of the war memorial. The war memorial in India stands 42 metres tall and is constructed in a hexagon shaped complex. Being historical very important for the region, today this war memorial is also considered first as the must to view spot in the city. Tourists from all around the globe visit this place which now also serves as likeable picnic spot with a huge number of people visiting it.

You will find several inscriptions here and name of servicemen are also inscribed the gateway to give them the honour for the courageous work they did during the deadly First World War. Every year during the Republic Day a great parade is hosted here which is again visited by many people, and the prime minister of India visits this place to pay the respects to all those brave soldiers here along by visiting the great Amar Jawan Jyoti. The place does not only tell us about the glorious sacrifice of the British- Indian army but also the main reason for constructing this war memorial was to inspire the future generation for facing all the upcoming issues with such bravery, honesty and loyalty like these brave soldiers who are remembered here today did so back in the history of the country. The India gate is also known for its some historic protests that happened here including the Nirbhaya rape case and it is the main place for the civil society protests that are conducted here in New Delhi.
