Basilica of Bom Jesus Travel Guide

The Basilica of Bom Jesus basilica located is famous for having the mortal remains of St. Francis Xavier and is a part of the Churches and convents of Goa UNESCO World Heritage Site. The church’s construction began back in 1594 and it was completed by 1605 making the church as the India’ first minor basilica. The baroque architecture of the holy place along with the intricate carving and structure are something which is highly appreciated here up to date. The church’s name ‘Bom Jesus’ is utilised for the Eco Home and this world heritage site was constructed by the archbishop, Dom Fr.

Alexio de Menezes. The consists of the body of St. Francis which was first brought to the Portuguese Malacca and later it was shifted to Goa and buried here. As per the belief even after 2 years when the saint’s body was shifted here it was fresh and his remains are the primary attraction of the holy site. The marble floors with huge walls makes the church looks more majestic and being one of the oldest churches found here you should indeed try visiting the sacred place. There is a glorious statue of Ignatius of Loyola is fixed here and the church has many paintings too which depict the life of St. Francis Xavier. You will also find a mausoleum here which was constructed by Giovanni Battista Foggini in the 17th-century and the casket in which the saint’s body is placed is made up of pure silver. There is also a well cherished Bom Jesus Basilica Art Gallery found here and you will find some of the paintings from a great artist Dom Martin.
