BARA IMAMBARA
Bara Imambara is also known as Asafi Imambara. It is a historical monument that was built in 1784. It was built by Asaf-ud-Daula, who was one of the renowned Nawabs of Awadh. The place comprises a large mosque, a labyrinth (the Bhul Bhulaiya), and a stepwell with running water which is known as the Shahi Baoli. The structure has two large gateways that lead to the central hall, It is known to be the largest vaulted chamber in the world.
CHOTA IMAMBARA
The historical structure of Chota Imambara was built in 1838 by Muhammad Ali Shah who was the third Nawab of Awadh. It was at first built as a congregation hall for the devotees of the Shiva. But later, the place turned into a mausoleum for the Nawab as well as his mother. The interiors of the structure are beautifully ornamented with chandeliers and crystal lamps. It is also known as ‘the Palace of Lights’. The exteriors elements have intricate Islamic calligraphy, which add to its overall visual appeal.
BRITISH RESIDENCY
The British Residency is basically a complex of buildings that was a residence of the British Resident General in earlier times. It was constructed in the last quarter of the 18th century, it was home to over 3000 British residents during the Indian Rebellion. Currently, the Residency can be found in ruins and is a protected monument under the Archeological Survey of India.
RUMI DARWAZA
If you travel to Lucknow, you must witness the grandeur of the Awadhi style of architecture. In Rumi Darwaza, a huge gateway is located between Bara Imambara and Chota Imambara. This gateway was built in 1784 by Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula. It is about 60-feet tall and is used as the logo for Lucknow city. The gate is designed after the Sublime Porte in Istanbul, it is also known as the Turkish Gate.
DILKUSHA KOTHI
Dilkusha Kothi is located on the banks of the River Gomti. It is the remains of a house that was built in the early 19th century. It was built in the English Baroque style of architecture. The building serves as the hunting lodge and summer resort for the Nawabs. There is nothing much left of the building today, just its external walls, a few towers, and a beautiful garden for people to spend time at. Due to its historical importance and architectural grandeur, Dilkusha Kothi is one of the remarkable places to visit in Lucknow.
