In New York City's Times Square

In New York City's Times Square is a large time ball known as the Times Square Ball.

The ball, which sits atop One Times Square, plays a central role in the annual Times Square New Year's Eve celebration known as the ball drop.

The ball begins its descent down a specially designed flagpole at 11:59:00 p.m. Eastern Time (ET)

In recent years, musical performances and other forms of live entertainment have typically preceded the dropping of the ball.

Adolph Ochs, owner of The New York Times, originally staged the event as a continuation of his New Year's Eve fireworks displays at the skyscraper to publicise

its new status as the Times' headquarters; Artkraft Strauss designed the ball.
