Towards the northwest is Kauai, and to the southeast is Molokai

the Kauai and Kaiwi canals provide the necessary separation between these three islands.

Oahu, the most populous of the Hawaiian Islands,

the third largest in terms of land area (597 square miles; 1,546 square kilometres) and is of volcanic origin.

The central plateau of the island of Hawaii separates the Koolau and Waianae mountain ranges

which run parallel to one another.
