Yosemite National Park is a beautiful park in the mountains of eastern California.
It's about 100 miles (160 km) southeast of Sacramento and about 140 miles (225 km) east of San Francisco.
About 15 miles (25 km) to the east is Devils Postpile National Monument, and about 40 miles (65 km) to the southeast is Kings Canyon National Park.
The park is 1,189 square miles in size and is surrounded entirely by national forest property (3,080 square km). UNESCO recognised it as a World Heritage property in 1984.
Yosemite Village, in Yosemite Valley, in the west-central area of the park, is where park administration is based.
The park encompasses the majority of the land between the Merced and Tuolumne river basins in the centre of the Sierra Nevada mountain range.
The elevation profile is generally rising from the west to the east, with the eastern boundary serving as a drainage divide.
Mount Lyell, at 13,114 feet (3,997 metres), is the highest peak in the park, but many summits to the southeast exceed 10,000 feet (3,050 metres) in height.
