Gandhi Smriti Museum introduces the visitors to this place where Mahatma Gandhi, formally referred to as the father of the nation, was killed on January 30, 1948. He lived in this house for 144 days until his death. The room, in which Gandhi was sleeping, now looks the same as when he left it. It is a war memorial that remembers martyrs of the British Indian Army who give up their lives for the Indian Empire in World War I & the Afghan Wars. India Gate was intended by Sir Edwin Lutyens. After India got independence, it became the tomb of the Indian Army’s Unknown Soldier, known as Amar Jawan Jyoti. The archway is 42 meters high & is made of red stone with “INDIA” written on both sides. Thousands of soldier’s names are inscribed on the arch. This giant citadel made by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan is the pride of Delhi. This mighty fort spreading in 2.4 km is built with the red stone & thus got the name Red Fort or Lal Quila. The wide moat surrounds the octagonal fort. The fort has two entrances – Delhi Gate & Lahori Gate but the second one is the major entrance of the Quila. This fort is divided into several premises that include Diwan-i-Am is the hall for the public, Rang Mahal is the water-cooled place for the royal ladies, Diwan-i-Khas is the hall for a special audience, Hamam, Mumtaz Mahal, Moti Masjid, & Naubat Khana (the music house). The Prime Minister unfurls Indian Tricolor every year on the anniversary of Indian Independence from British rule on the 15th of August. The magnificent past & majesty attracts tourists. Qutub Minar
Qutub Minar is the world’s heritage site which is located in Mehrauli. It is the tall brick tower of red sandstone which is built in 1193 AD and was erected by Qutub-ud-Din Aibak & completed by Iltutmish and Firoz Shah Tughlak. This conical tower is 72.5 meters high & has 399 steps; its base is 14.3 meters broad whereas the top of the floor is 2.75m wide. Iron pillar or Ashoka Pillar adjacent to this Minar is also not to be missed. It is supposed that if make the wish & stand with your back to the pillar, & if you can hold your hands around it then your wish will surely be fulfilled.
